A new artist in my series

Portraits

Some of my series like Artists in their studio are still ongoing and I keep adding pictures from time to time. Now I am very happy to be able adding two portraits of the Dutch artist Ebba van der Bijl. She has her new studio on the second floor of an old classy schoolbuilding in Hengelo. She just moved here and is still decorating and searching for practical and beautiful solutions all around. We had a fine morning together with strong black coffee, talking about art and what to aim for.

Here is a little update on new develoments in this new season. First of all the show at Café Bolwerk is still running and I already received a lot of kind comments on them. The seven male portraits just fit beautifully into the scenery, just what I was hoping for. Then I added during last days I more and more albums to the website to show a wider range of my work. I added Emily and Trees, if you like just take a look. The last new point worth mentioning is that my art collective Wakker (Awake) is focussing on a new topic together. It will be a large project and I am very curious where it will bring me/us.

My series “Een Europese geschiedenis” will be on display in Café Het Bolwerk for the entire month of September. The series is inspired by this (Dutch) poem written by Jan Glas that goes by the same name:

Een Europese geschiedenis

 

Ik kende alleen de zee, het dorp en de landerijen,

de meisjes die met bloemen in hun haar het voorjaar vierden,

volmaakt ondergeschikt aan onze beschaving.

 

Toen ik eenentwintig was ging ik naar de stad

en ben daar gebleven. De meeuwen

keren elke dag  terug naar de zee.

In de stad wordt het voorjaar niet gevierd.

 

Ik werd een typische anonieme Noord-Europese man.

Ik sliep op een goed matras,

iedere dag was ik online.

Ik dronk te veel, dat is waar,

maar dat doet een man die gedoemd is te mislukken.

1000 pictures a day, Announcement

On Sunday, 28th of May, it finally happened: My show Fire in the Forest was opened. It was quite festive, a lot of people came to have a look and hear the stories behind the pictures. There was champagne and laughter. I even sold some pictures, so now some images are accompanied by little red dots. I wrote a statement for the show that explains some idea’s behind it, you can read it at the bookstore, but I like to publish it here, too. It is in Dutch though.

Fire in the Forest

Het was 22 juli 2012 rond een uur of elf – ik liep naar het dakraam. Daar zag ik iets wat mijn aandacht trok. Het motief leek onbeduidend, maar sprak op deze warme dag toch tot mijn verbeelding. Het was een kleine witte wolk voor een zomers blauwe lucht, deels verscholen achter de top van een reuze conifeer. In mijn hoofd ontstond een titel: Cloud, hiding en de foto was af.

Het was alsof deze warme dag door deze foto van een wolk – die als het ware gepersonificeerd de dag van boven gade sloeg – als in een capsule was vastgehouden. Had ik nou zomaar het geheim van het leven ontdekt? De tijd vasthouden én een eigen interpretatie van de werkelijkheid in esthetische vorm gieten?

Adrenaline stroomde door mijn lijf, hiermee wou ik doorgaan, één jaar lang en toen het jaar voorbij was, was ik zelf nog lang niet klaar. Uiteindelijk ontstond de serie van 1 000 foto´s – 1 000 maal mijn interpretatie van de werkelijkheid.

Er ontstonden series binnen de reeks: zo fotografeerde ik bijvoorbeeld een hele maand uitsluitend rode dingen en ik begon me in portretten te verdiepen (de serie My lovely Neighbors was in 2016 hier bij Broekhuis te zien). Ik kon er veel van mijzelf in kwijt: humor, filosofische vragen, speelsheid, Heimat, maar ook historische momenten zoals bijvoorbeeld de dag na de aanslagen op Charlie Hebdo.

Fire in the Forest  is een selectie van de 1 000 dagen – het is een zoektocht naar het moment in de dag, naar de kleine dingen die helpen te waarderen wat je hebt. De vaak poëtische titels maken dat het beeld beklijft.

It’s spring, tulips in the garden and inside the house, all the lovely colors are coming back. They grow and wither again already. For just one day the magnolia of my neighbor was at her best, now she loses the blossoms again. Live the moment.

In March I went to a monastery to contemplate about literature. And all of a sudden it became spring all around. Time for developing new ideas, having new thoughts and live the new life. The other day I learned that the word to develop/ontwerpen/entwerfen does mean the opposite of to bow to/onderwerpen/unterwerfen. Thus creating means freedom. I love that insight.

From May 28 and July 3 my pictures will be on show at Broekhuis, Enschede (The Netherlands). Most of the images are from my a-picture-a-day-series. I am still pondering the ultimate choice, but I already decided on the goal: I want the beholder to laugh and to feel. To me this is very exciting of course. The show is named after a picture called Fire in the forest – taken in Denmark some years ago. The title refers to the design of a sweater I did when I was in high school. I designed this jumper with jazzy red and green, in love with the strong contrasts, the vibrance and the evident fun. Now this old memory comes back and I embrace it. 🙂

Good things about 2017

939cold-linesIt’s only February and I am already looking forward to two very nice chances. In June and September I will show some pictures at the bookstore again and at Café Bolwerk, the cosiest café of Enschede. I am going to start with a series of pictures with poetic titles out of my 1000 a-picture-a-day-project. I can’t wait to decide which ones. In September I will show Een Europese geschiedenis again, the seven portraits of men, each of them born in a different decennium of last century. I am very excited about it all.
